Have you ever waited in line at a bank and had your toddler knock down a heavy aluminum trash can? Has your child ever stapled the floral arrangement on the receptionist's desk at a car dealership? Do you find yourself trying to keep your child away from soiled toys at a doctor's office? Have you ever tried to read a weekly news magazine or business journal to entertain fidgety children because there was nothing else available to keep them still and quiet while your were waiting for your car to be serviced?
I have experienced all these situations and have concluded that it is time for businesses to be mindful of the needs of their clients and customers who shop with small children in tow. My hope is that owners of these kinds of establishments and others who offer services to the public will become Child–Friendly in 2005.
It surprises me that so few businesses provide safe diversionary play for small children who must wait within their establishments. It is true that some places have taken measures to entertain children who visit, but most of them have gone about it in the wrong way—creating a potentially dangerous situation for children and a liability for themselves. How do they do this? By setting out toys for this occasion that are inappropriate for public settings—toys that pose a choking hazard for children under the age of three. Nor is it uncommon to find in these tubs and boxes of toys playthings that are not clean—toys that likely have never been washed.
Why do so many businesses show a lack of concern for customers with small children? Or, rather, why do so few businesses show concern for the safety of children, in general? I can’t imagine that a complimentary coffee station in a waiting area for adults would have chipped coffee mugs or a soiled counter top for very long. Why, then, is it okay for our children to wait in public areas that are unsafe and ill–maintained?
