Responsibility Charts Work for Adults, Too!

I have come up with a method for making both personal and professional responsibilities more manageable. My Responsibility Chart works so well for me that I wanted to share it with you. I find that if I list the tasks I need to do on a chart, I can do just a few each day and feel satisfied that I am working toward accomplishing those things that need attention. Tackling jobs methodically that need to get done has given me more time to spend with my son and more time to enjoy other activities that bring me pleasure.

Here is how it works.

Step 1

List all the chores and tasks for which you are responsible. Be sure to break them into manageable projects and to be specific. For example, write "dust diningroom" instead of simply "dust" or write "gather information for the next newsletter" instead of simply "work on newsletter."

Step 2

Decide how often each task needs to be done and schedule it accordingly.

Example:

Chore A: Daily

Chore B: Weekly

Chore C: Twice Weekly

Chore D: Every 2 Weeks

Chore E: Every 4 Weeks

Step 3

Using a table with 7 cells and four rows to represent four weeks of any given month, plug in the chores and tasks that need to be done. At the bottom of your Responsibility Chart, create a Daily Chores List that spells out the individual chores that must be done daily. Then make an entry in each cell of your Responsibility Chart that simply says "Daily Chores," and refer to the Daily Chores List for an explanation of what you need to accomplish each day.

You might decide to schedule more chores and tasks on those days in which you have more time to spare and fewer chores on those days in which you regularly have greater commitments. I rarely schedule chores on weekends because i want to be free to enjoy that time with my family. Or you might find that spreading chores out fairly evenly over the course of a week helps to keep each day more manageable.

Don't forget to mark off the chores and tasks as you accomplish them. This feels so good! It helps to bring about a sense of closure and creates a sense of well being knowing that you are in control of the this list that so often can take control of you.

I hope this helps to lighten your load.
