Most kids love water. They especially love to pour it. The problem is, sometimes toddlers pour it in places where you don't want it.
For several years I have been letting my kids water the plants in the house. It is a "chore" that for them, is really a treat. I used to fill a big jug, and then I would go around with them to help them water. I recently discovered a great alternative, and I wanted to share it with the Kiddinaround.com newsletter subscribers. Save a small water bottle from when you are out. The kind with the pull out spout work best. Let the kids use these to water. They will be much less likely to spill. The process will take longer, so it is more fun for them. I even let my kids put stickers on their bottles so that they would know which one is theirs.
Sometimes, the simplest tasks bring the greatest pleasure to kids. In watering a plant a child learns about caring for things, about how things grow, and also will derive a sense of self esteem from knowing that he/she is helping out the family.
